Exercise that Brain!

A few days ago Aunt Susie and I took a trip to Bookman's, a used bookstore. We didn't spend too long at the store, but it was still enough time for me to find and come away with one small treasure, which is the book you see to your left. I thought I would get it to exercise my brain a bit and while I'm at it, I may as well allow you all the same opportunity! Here is your first puzzle:

In a certain bank the positions of cashier, manager, and teller are held by Brown, Jones and Smith, though not necessarily respectively.

The teller, who was an only child, earns the least.
Smith, who married Brown's sister, earns more than the manager.

What position does each man fill?

I encourage you to print this little puzzle out so you can study it throughout the day, unless of course you're just so smart all you need is one glance.

If I remember this weekend, I will try to work this out. But something tells me that I won't be able to figure it out, even if I do remember to try :) Oh, the joys not having a lot upstairs.

You shouldn't be so hard on yourself, Rosie! I'm sure you can figure this out.

Oh don't worry I don't consider myself to be that hard on myself, I am just not afraid to embrace the facts as they really are. Honesty is the best policy :)

Maybe Mark and I can sit down and analyze it together. I am sure it will be a real bonding time for us to share together.

Oh, Nicole, like I just told you on the phone, I think I damaged my brain in my fall.

Rosie, I hope you and Mark got to having your bonding time while working through this puzzle! And Grandma, if you really did damage your brain, this puzzle will be good exercise for you! I do hope no damage was caused though!

Nicole...we just saw this post! I am a nerd, and I love these things. Ok, tell me if I am right. Smith is the Cashier, Brown is the Manager and Jones is the Teller.

And if I am right, tell me...why would the cashier earn more than the manager?

Nicole said...

Sonya, you are the big winner! The cashier must have made more money than the manager because he stole from his register.

Hey Nicole... I am sorry, I actually totally forgot about it this weekend, so Mark didn't even get a chance to look at because I totally forgot to tell him about it. And I have no excuse because we spent a ton of time together this weekend. I send my apologies. Although, I am sure you could probably care less. Sorry I missed your call last night. Will call you tonite after BSF. Love you.

Oh Rosie, I do care about this because it is for you and Mark's enrichment. I'll put another one up soon for the two of you to crack together. However, you'll have to act quickly because Sonya appears to be a master of these thought and logic puzzles!

lol...Nicole you are hilarious. Thank you for caring about Mark's and I's enrichment. But, I still think Sonya will be beat me because we don't have internet at home and haven't for a long time as you know. But, the good news is we should be at our goal in about 6 weeks and our prize to ourselves is internet and basic cable. So if you wait until around that time, maybe I'll have a chance :)

Ha ha! That is funny, Nicole. The cashier stole from the register...that explains it then! When you come visit, will you have this book? We can do one over dinner each night :)

Well Rosie, I'll see if I can wait 6 weeks to share my next puzzle on-linen to try and give you a fair shot. However, I'm afraid Sonya will have a little more practice in than you because yes, Sonya, I will have my book with me and I think that is a great idea to work through some mind puzzles during supper!

Well Nicole, no matter what, Sonya is one smart cookie and a force to be reckoned with, with the weapons she's got going on in that dome of hers. So whether I have internet or not, or she gets to practice more or not, the facts remain that she has a high intelligence factor. This must be recognized.

One thing I find quite humorous is the amount of discussion about doing puzzles. I love that you bring life to something that to the general population could be so boring. You are such a present, Miss Nicole.

I love all the interaction on this puzzle. I think we have a lot of smart cookies in our family, myself excluded, that will be able to outwit you Nicole on your puzzles, etc. Hey, maybe you need to come up with one on your own without referring to a book!!!

I love Grandma's suggstion Nicole.

Nicole said...

I'm afraid I am highly unqualified to come up with my own puzzles, ladies!

RosebudWitt said...

Nicole, as you told me in your comment above, "you shouldn't be too hard on yourself...I'm sure you can figure this out." :)

I don't know Rosie, I think I am still lacking confidence in my puzzle creating skills. But I do love the amount of comments this post is creating, it is definitely setting a record number!

Yes, this post has generated quite the number of comments, even though I have put probably half of them up. But, i just can't help it. I just like you that much, that's all. So, I thought I would write you another one on it, just to bump it up one more number. Any luck on getting that puzzle started?
